Micronor

Micronor by Janssen

Micronor is a widely used oral contraceptive that is also called the ‘mini-pill’ or progestogen-only pill. The mini-pill is almost as effective as ‘the pill’, making it a good alternative option for women who are particularly sensitive to oestrogen. Micronor pills may also be more suitable for women who need contraceptive cover when they are breastfeeding, or if they are over 35 and a smoker.

Onlineclinic offers you a discreet way to order your oral contraception. As part of our ordering process, we will ask you to complete a confidential consultation form so that our doctor can make sure Micronor pills are the safest oral contraceptive for you to use. Your order will then be prepared by our pharmacy, and dispatched via free overnight delivery.

What are the benefits?

Micronor offers almost 100% effective protection and is a convenient way to protect yourself against falling pregnant. As it contains only progestogen, there is no risk of developing side effects associated with oral contraceptives containing oestrogen.

If you've experienced a rise in blood pressure while using the standard pill or if you are at risk of developing blood clots and heart problems, a mini-pill may be a better option for you than the combined pill. Women who are over 35 and regular smokers are often also advised to use the mini-pill instead of combined oral contraceptives, as are women who are breastfeeding.

How does the mini-pill work?

Micronor contains norethisterone which is an artificial form of the natural hormone progestogen. This contraceptive doesn't work by stopping ovulation; it stops you from conceiving by firstly increasing the thickness of the fluid in the cervix, which prevents sperm from entering the womb. Secondly, if sperm manages to fertilise an egg, it can't bury itself in the womb lining. That's because norethisterone prevents the womb lining from thickening enough for an egg to root itself in the lining and grow, so it can't develop.

Who can and can't take Micronor?

Most women over 18 can safely order and use Micronor. However, there are certain health conditions and medications which may prohibit its use. Make sure that you mention all current and past medical information requested in your online consultation. Women who may not be able to use Micronor pills include those with a history of circulatory, heart, kidney or liver problems, unexplained vaginal bleeding or migraines. You must not take the mini-pill if you are pregnant.

How do you take the mini-pill?

Unlike dual contraceptives, the mini-pill is taken for the entire duration of your 28 day cycle. There is no break between strips in a pack and there is no seven-day break.

When you take Micronor, you will have your period as normal. If you start taking Micronor on the first day of your period, you will be immediately protected. If this isn't possible, you can start to take it up until the fifth day of menstrual bleeding but you will have to wait seven days for it to become fully effective. To ensure that you remain fully protected, take Micronor pills at the same time every day. You can take this mini-pill up to three hours late if you forget to take it.

Are there any side effects?

Micronor is very well tolerated, which is why it is often prescribed to women who experience side effects when using the combined pill. However, it can still cause some women some side effects. The most commonly reported side effects include headaches, changes in menstrual patterns, nausea, migraines, weight gain and a reduced sex drive. The milder side effects of Micronor pills tend to go away as soon as your body has managed to adapt to the new hormones.
