What are the benefits of Mercilon?

If taken on the first day of your period, Mercilon pills will protect against pregnancy almost immediately and will be almost 100% effective. It's a popular alternative to Marvelon because it contains a lower dosage of synthetic oestrogen. Additionally, studies have shown that women are much less likely to experience weight gain after starting this medication, which is a common side effect of many combined contraceptives. In fact, a small number of users have actually experienced some weight loss.

How does Mercilon prevent pregnancy?

Mercilon is a combined contraceptive, using both a synthetic oestrogen (ethinylestradiol 20 micrograms) and a synthetic progestogen (desogestrel 150 micrograms) to prevent pregnancy in three different ways. The first way it works is by preventing ovulation so an egg is not released and can't be fertilised. Secondly, it alters the lining of the womb so that an egg cannot grow there if one does get released and fertilised. Thirdly, it alters the cervical lining, preventing sperm from entering the womb and fertilising an egg.

Who can take Mercilon?

Mercilon can be used by women 18 years and older as a daily contraceptive. However, some women may be prohibited from using this pill due to certain health concerns. These include women suffering from liver, heart and circulation problems, as well as women who are pregnant. Those who are breastfeeding would be advised to use a mini-pill such as Cerazette or Micronor.

How do you take Mercilon?

You should start taking Mercilon pills on the first day of your menstrual cycle, so that the contraceptive effect will be almost immediate. You can take it up to day five of your period, but you will need to use a condom for seven days until the contraceptive becomes fully effective.

This contraceptive is a monophasic pill; this means that it is taken for 21 days of your menstrual cycle, followed by a seven-day break. During this break you will still be fully protected, although you may experience a withdrawal bleed as the hormones from the pill leave your system.

Does Mercilon cause side effects?

Mercilon can cause side effects for some women, depending on whether they are sensitive to the synthetic hormones used in this contraceptive. The most common side effects include nausea, breast tenderness, mood changes, and breakthrough bleeding between periods. Not all women will experience these effects, and in most cases they should clear with time.
