The American Food and Drug Administration, equivalent to the EMA in Europe and MHRA in the UK, has approved a male vibrating device, called Viberect, for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

The device claims to be able to help men maintain an erection without the help of erectile dysfunction medications such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra and is also said to be able to provide men with stronger orgasms.

The device is mainly intended for men with mild or moderate erectile dysfunction, such as those with spinal cord injuries, who find it difficult to get or maintain an erection, or those recovering from a prostatectomy.

Similar to erectile dysfunction medications, the device can be used right before sexual intercourse and stimulates the dorsal and ventral penile nerves to improve blood flow to the penile tissues and enhance erection strength. Impotence treatments like Viagra work to make erections easier by allowing blood to enter the penile tissues more freely. Although the device is said to be less likely to cause side effects than medications, it may not be able to help people with more serious erection problems.

The medical device will only be available on prescription in the United States and it is currently not available in the United Kingdom and Europe. This is not the first attempt by doctors to find alternative methods to medications to help treat erection problems, with alternative freeze therapy to help with premature ejaculation currently being tested in the US.
