If you are suffering from erectile dysfunction, you are probably in the process of trying to decide which erectile dysfunction medication will be most suited to you. Viagra has been the most popular and best known medication for impotence since it was first launched in 1998, despite competition in the form of Cialis, which is also available as a daily tablet, and Levitra, which can be taken at a significantly lower dosage. The enduring popularity of Viagra is likely due to the fact that it has the longest history, and has entered the cultural lexicon as the medication for erectile dysfunction. For many people, the name Viagra is synonymous with impotence treatment. For this reason, some people do not even attempt to look into other possibilities, even though a different type of treatment may be better suited to them.

Though it is true that Viagra has the added benefit of over 13 years of success, compared to eight years for Levitra and Cialis, this does not necessarily mean that it should be the first choice for every man who is having regular problems gaining or maintaining an erection. The dosage choices for Viagra - 25mg, 50mg and 100mg - are higher than its competitors, meaning that men who are older, or those with underlying health concerns, should exercise caution when considering this medication. The active ingredient in Viagra is a PDE-5 inhibitor called sildenafil, which was initially trialled as a treatment for high blood pressure before its ability to treat impotence was discovered.

Levitra is continuing to increase in popularity as an alternative treatment for erectile dysfunction. It is often recommended to men who are not suitable for Viagra, such as those over the age of 50 and those with health conditions that make the high dosages of Viagra potentially dangerous. Levitra contains vardenafil, which is also a PDE-5 inhibitor, and is available in the dosages 5mg, 10mg and 20mg. A dissolvable version of Levitra, known as Levitra Orodispersible, has recently been launched. It is the only dissolvable treatment for erectile dysfunction that is clinically proven to work.

The third prescription medication for impotence is Cialis, which can be taken either on an as-needed basis in a 10mg or 20mg dose or as a daily 2.5mg or 5mg dose. Cialis contains tadalafil as its active ingredient, another PDE-5 inhibitor, and is gaining in popularity due to its duration as a one-off pill and its ability to be taken as a daily tablet. As-needed Cialis can last for up to 36 hours, which is far longer than either Levitra or Viagra and has earned it the nickname “the weekend pill”. Cialis Daily allows the user to gain and maintain an erection at any time, and is usually prescribed to patients who have persistent and long-term problems with erectile dysfunction.
