Greyhound trainer fed his dogs Viagra to enhance their performance.
According to The Daily Mail, 61-year-old Anthony Fowler gave his greyhound, Jake, cannabis when he wanted him to lose and Viagra or testosterone supplements when he wanted him to win, depending on the odds presented at illegal betting meetings.
Mr Fowler, who appeared in court on Monday, was first interviewed by police because of suspected reports that he was selling cannabis. John Ellwood, a prosecutor from the RSPCA, said that it was during this interview that the defendant admitted to giving his dog Viagra or cannabis.
He also used other treatments to affect his dogs’ ability to perform, but according to Mr Fowler giving them Viagra provided the most beneficial results. Mr Fowler was later interviewed by the RSPCA, however Jake had been put to sleep shortly before the interview because Mr Fowler did not want to pay to have the dog’s shoulder repaired, which it injured during a race.
Mr Fowler has since been found guilty and his other dog has been handed over the RSPCA. This case has prompted founder of greyhound protection group, Trudy Baker to push for more stringent regulations.
Viagra isn’t likely to cause any ill effects in humans, as long as it’s taken responsibly and by people with genuine erection problems, but the medication wasn’t developed for the use of animals and can therefore cause serious life threatening problems in dogs, such as inflation of the blood vessels. Cannabis is equally dangerous and can cause hallucinations and convulsions in canines.
