Although most people with asthma will experience symptoms long term, asthma treatment is what allows asthma patients to live a life with minimum restrictions. Asthma treatments can be divided into two groups, namely preventers and relievers, the first providing relief in the event of asthma symptoms and the other preventing any symptoms from occurring. Inhaled asthma treatments

Inhalers deliver asthma medication straight to your airways to provide quick and convenient relief when you need it. However, they can also be used as a long-acting treatment to decrease the airways' ability to react to irritants, by helping reduce inflammation in the airways. There are many different ways in which asthma treatments can be delivered via the airways, which could include regular inhalers, spacers and nebulisers.

Inhalers

Inhalers can contain either a gas or dry powder, which it's able to propel down the airways so that they can work when needed. The most commonly used inhalers are Ventolin (salbutamol) and Bricanyl (terbutaline), and they are fast acting inhalers that can work as preventers, as they ease inflammation or as relievers, because they stimulate airways so that they can relax.

A preventer inhaler containing a steroid solution such as Serevent, will have to be used daily, while relievers are taken as and when they are required.

Spacers

Spacers are mostly used to help ensure that you inhale the correct dose of treatment, similar to inhalers they can either work as preventers or as relievers. These devices are particularly useful during acute asthma attacks or in small children, as you simply have to activate the device and breathe as normal. They can also be an alternative to regular inhalers containing steroid medications, if you find that they give you a sore throat.

Nebulisers

Nebulisers deliver asthma medication by forcing it through an extremely fine mist that can then be breathed in. They can be used in cases where emergency treatment is required to provide relief in case of an asthma attack.

Injections and tablets

If you experience extremely severe asthma symptoms or you find that you can't an inhaled treatment, then asthma treatment may be prescribed in the form of tablets or injections. Steroid tablets or injections will only be administered temporarily until you condition has improved to the point where you can go back to using your usual asthma treatments.

Controlling your condition

Apart from treatment it's also important to take other steps to make asthma attacks or symptoms appearing less of a possibility. This could include keeping a diary of your asthma triggers and avoiding them as best you can or stopping smoking.
